Iran, Iraq hold first cultural meeting

Tehran, July 28, IRNA - Iran and Iraq held the first cultural meeting on Sunday in presence of a number of religious and cultural dignitaries.

The head of Iran's Islamic Culture and Relations Organization Mehdi Mostafavi and Iraqi Deputy Minister of Culture Jabir al-Jabiri werepresent in the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, Mostafavi said: "Iran and Iraq have deep-rooted historical and cultural amity and that no one could separate them." "Today, Muslims are accountable for the cultural needs in world,especially in the Middle East," he added.

Referring to the Iraq's Cultural Week inaugurated in Tehran on July22, he said that formal relations opened the doors for mutual ties.

Al-Jabiri, for his part, expressed his pleasure with the meeting that"brings the two nations closer".

Referring to the aftermath of US-imposed eight-year Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) that damaged the two nations, he said that Iran-Iraq warwas actually imposed on the Iraqi people than the Iranians.

"Iraqi nation was not interested in Iran-Iraq war but they were forced to take military action against Iran by certain powers." However, the two countries have now forgotten that devastating war and achievedunity, he added.

Appreciating Iran's hospitality offered to the Iraqi delegation, hehoped that the two nations will enjoy long-lasting relations.
