Presumed insurgents attempt to cause disorder across Narathiwat

ARATHIWAT, Sept 6 – Suspected insurgents fired on a local government office and carried out series of arsons at mobile phone transmission towers and public telephone booths across six districts of the violence-plagued province of Narathiwat on the weekend.

No one was injured in the incidents, which occurred almost simultaneously late Sunday evening.

The first attack occurred with gunmen armed with assault rifles opened fire on Changpueak subdistrict offices in Chanae district, damaging the building. Spikes were thrown on the road to prevent the police following them.

In Yingo district, a roadside shelter, a mobile phone signal pole and a public telephone booth were torched.

In Rangae district, a public phone booth was set on fire and in Sungai Padi district, spikes were thrown on a road, damaging passing vehicles, while public telephone booth was set on fire in the provincial seat.

Lt-Gen Kasikorn Kirisri, commander of combined civil, police and military forces in the region, said the incidents in Narathiwat on Sunday were aimed at creating disturbances during the holy month of Ramadan but were not intended to cause the loss of lives.

He said persons who carried out arsons and shooting may believe that participating in an attack during the holy period is a form of making merit, but it is not. (MCOT online news)
