Computer seized from 15yo in raid
Police have seized 35 computers from owners as young as 15 in raids targeting people
believed to have accessed child sexual abuse material.
A joint operation between South Australian Police (SAPOL) and the Australian Federal
Police (AFP) targeted computers that had accessed a particular website - with
origins in Queensland - featuring child exploitation material.
Some 17 raids were conducted as part of Operation Difficult across metropolitan
Adelaide and some regional areas on the weekend, with more raids to come.
So far, one person has been arrested and one reported but more charges are expected
once analysis of the seized computers is carried out, starting on Monday.
"The computers ... are all linked," Detective Superintendent Phil Hoff of the SAPOL
Sexual Crime Investigation Branch told reporters in Adelaide on Sunday.
"They all accessed information off a particular website and we believe that they
contain images of child exploitation.
"Child exploitation is torture."
Det Supt Hoff said the youngest person a computer was taken from was 15 and the
oldest 52. One woman was among those who had a computer seized.
So far, one person has been arrested for aggravated possession of child pornography,
and another - a registered sex offender - has been reported for failing to supply
information relating to his computer to police as required.
One of the people to have a computer seized was involved with a youth group.
Det Supt Hoff said it was unclear if the individuals who had accessed the site were
at all associated, but the offending material had been accessed deliberately.
"People don't come across this stuff by accident," he said.
"This is a deliberate endeavour on their part to proliferate the exploitation of
children."
He would not reveal details of the website, which has been closed down for several
months.
