PM attends Thailand National Pavilion Day celebration at World Expo
SHANGHAI, Sept 5 - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday attended the Thailand National Pavilion Day celebration at the World Expo in Shanghai and expressed high hopes that the kingdom could hold a similar expo in the next decade.
Accompanied by ministers and senior officials, Mr Abhisit arrived at the East Square Expo Center where the Thai pavilion is situated and spoke to an assembled audience.
He said he was pleased that host China held the expo successfully as 180 countries took part and more than 45 million people had already been visiting.
By the time this expo ends, it is expected that some 70 million visitors will have viewed it, Mr Abhisit said, adding that the success of this event has inspired Thailand to vie for hosting the World Expo in 2020.
The World Expo in Shanghai began on May 1 and ends October 31.
Mr Abhisit, who was welcomed upon his arrival at the East Square Expo Center by Li Zhaozhuo, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said he was pleased to see that more than four million people had visited the Thai pavilion and the number should rise by the time the expo ends.
He said in his weekly TV and radio address broadcast from Bangkok that he expected that Thailand could apply for hosting the World Expo for 2020 during the first half of next year as several details such as the location still needed to be considered. (MCOT online news)
