Int'l community says terror attacks in India "unacceptable"

Washington, July 28 (PTI) The US and the EU Sunday led the international community in condemning the "vicious" bomb attacks in Ahmedabad and Bangalore on consecutive days andassured support to India in its fight against terrorism.

"The US condemns the vicious terror attacks in Bangalore on Friday and Ahmedabad on Saturday," the American embassy inNew Delhi said in a statement.

"We extend our condolences to victims of these senselessattacks and to their families," it said.

The European Union termed the serial blasts in the two cities which left 47 people dead and over 170 injured as"unacceptable" and expressed its solidarity with India.

"The Presidency of the Council of European Union presents its deepest condolences to India, its government and its people, as well as to the victims and their families," the EUsaid in a statement.

It reaffirmed that it will fight the scourge of terrorismalongside India.

Afghanistan, which witnessed an attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul on July 7 that killed 60 people, including a Brigadier-rank defence attache and an IFS officer, called for a "collective struggle against terrorism which threatens the stability of the region." "Terrorism is a serious threat against the international community and this evil phenomenon must be foughtcollectively," Afghan President Hamid Karzai said.

Karzai had blamed Pakistan's ISI for the embassy bombing,but Islamabad denied any role in the attack.

Condemning the bomb attacks, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who is visiting the US, described them as "dastardly acts of senseless violence" against innocentpeople.

Gilani "has strongly condemned the acts of terrorist violence in the Indian cities of Ahmedabad and Bangalore and expressed deep sympathies with the bereaved families and the victims of these dastardly acts of senseless violence againstinnocent persons," a statement said.

During his three-day visit, Gilani is likely to be grilled by the US leadership on the fight against terrorism as Washington has been asking it to do more to crackdown on al-Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country's restive tribalbelt bordering Afghanistan .

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa said "these wanton acts of terror by the forces are ranged against democracy." "Sri Lanka being a country gravely affected by the scourge of terrorism for more than two decades, we understand well how the manipulators of terror seek to destroy harmonious relations among communities and the democratic traditions thatprevail in our societies".

Expressing solidarity with India in its "hour of difficulty", Rajapaksa said his government remained firm on its commitment to jointly fight the menace of terrorism in all of South Asia. PTI TEAM
