12 DSI investigation teams to seek facts on 89 deaths during Red Shirt protest

BANGKOK, Sept 1 -- The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has set up 12 investigation teams to seek facts on the 89 deaths registered during the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protest in April and May this year, according to DSI Director-General Tharit Pengdit.

Mr Tharit told reporters after chairing a meeting of investigators on Wednesday that the teams must conclude their investigation within 45 days.

He said DSI divided the cases during the Red Shirt protests into 12 incidents and 12 teams of investigators will be responsible to find the facts relating to the cases.

The highest attention will be given to the high-profile cases involving six people shot dead at Wat Pathumwanaram near Ratchaprasong intersection, the main protest venue; the death of Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol or Seh Daeng, an Army specialist general; Japanese photographer Hiro Muramoto and Italian reporter Fabio Polenghi.

A press conference will be held to announce the results of the investigation after 45 days, he said.

Mr Tharit said the investigators would try to find out who killed the victims and how they were killed.

The 12 teams would coordinate with the 11 police stations where the cases happened to get information and the fact-finding mission would cover all aspects of forensic science, he said.

The DSI would officially open a centre Thursday September 2 to receive information from the public and media which may help give the investigators more clues on the deaths.

Mr Tharit affirmed that the investigation would be transparent and straightforward, no matter if the cases involve any group of the public or officials.

No specific results have been determined in advance, he said, adding that the DSI wanted to establish the truth, without distortion, and reveal the facts to the public.

Italian freelance photographer Polenghi, 48, was shot dead during a military operation on May 19 while covering the clashes between troops and Red Shirt protesters at Ratchaprasong and its surrounding areas.

Reuters cameraman Muramoto was killed during the clashes between government security forces and anti-government protesters at Khok Wua intersection on Rajadamnoen Avenue on the night of April 10.

Gen Khattiya was shot in the right temple on May 13 at a Red Shirt rally site at Saladaeng intersection while being interviewed by a foreign journalist and died early on May 17. (MCOT online news)
