TASHKENT, September 1 (Itar-Tass) - Uzbekistan's President Islam
Karimov said that the republic's main task is to be among the world's
developed democratic countries. The republic should solve the tasks of
structural improvements in the economy and of the formation of a strong
civil society.
"To achieve the goal, we should provide a high level of the country's
development and the wellbeing of our people by active reforms and
improvements of the economy, by modernisation and liberalisation of the
country, by formation of a strong civil society," he said on Tuesday night
over the celebration of the 19th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence.
"It would be impossible to achieve the goals without further
strengthening relations and mutual understanding with our close and
distanced neighbours, without the development of cooperation with the
international community," Karimov said.
He urged the nation "to cherish as the apple of the eye peace and
safety in our house," "to be watchful and prepared to nip all attempts to
arouse tension and confrontation in the region."
Karimov spoke about the social and economic development of the
country. The economy grew by nine and 8.1 percent over the past two years
respectively. Forecasts say, the growth over 2010 may be around 8.5
percent, he added.
"This is the result of persistent effort of our people throughout the
years of independence."
Uzbekistan celebrates its independence for the 19th time. Celebration
ceremonies will take place throughout the country.
