Commerce Ministry boosts trade and cooperation under ACMECS
BANGKOK, Sept 1 – Thailand's Ministry of Commerce has overseen a satisfactory expansion of multilateral trade and investment under the framework of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), according to Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj.
Speaking after presiding over the opening of a seminar on “Trade and Investment under the ACMECS Framework," Mr Yanyong said that Thailand’s trade with members of ACMECS had increased annually.
In the first seven months of this year, trade with Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar totaled Bt162.88 billion, up nearly 14 per cent from Bt142.94 billion in the same period last year.
Of this, Bt99.77 billion is from exports and Bt63.11 billion from imports.
Bilateral trade with Vietnam was highest in value at Bt127.34 billion, followed by Myanmar with Bt79.34 billion, Laos at Bt50.75 billion, and Cambodia at Bt32.79 billion.
“The Foreign Trade Department is the main liaison agency responsible for facilitating trade and investment," Mr Yanyong said.
"The working committee tasked to do the job met July 8 in Bangkok and progressed in establishing One Stop Services and Single Window Inspection at border checkpoints to facilitate trade among member countries.
The seminar helps boost the understanding of using the five-country cooperation, Mr Yanyong said.
The cooperation framework under ACMECS comprises five countries – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam – was officially set up in November 2003 under Thailand’s initiative.
Its goal is to create employment, narrow the income gap between member countries, and cash in on the strength and diversification of member countries to boost the balanced development by a cooperation framework covering eight areas: trade and investment, agriculture, energy, communications, tourism, human resources development, public health, and environment.
