Kangas outlast Demons by 10 points

North Melbourne sealed their reputation as the best side outside the AFL top eight
with a 10-point win over Melbourne in their round 22 match at the MCG.
The ninth-placed Kangaroos finished the AFL home-and-away season with an 11-11
record after holding off the Demons 17.11 (113) to 15.13 (103).
North trailed by eight points early in the final term but retiring forward Corey
Jones kicked two late goals to help inspire the Kangaroos to a hard-earned victory.
While Jones kicked three in a solid effort, Melbourne's departing captain James
McDonald also had a big send-off with 26 disposals and 12 tackles.
Both players were cheered off the field by the 31,064 fans.
Liam Jurrah and Brad Green kicked five goals each for the Demons.
Melbourne coach Dean Bailey put teenager Tom Scully on North captain Brent Harvey
and Scully ran off the 301-game veteran to gather 28 disposals.
However Scully was quiet in the last quarter as Harvey had eight touches including a
brilliant goal on the run from 50 metres out, finishing with three goals.
In a battle of the two of the league's promising young sides, North midfielder Levi
Greenwood had a game-high 39 disposals and Brady Rawlings was also busy with 37
while Harvey had 30 touches.
The Kangaroos kicked the first three goals of the game and led by 13 points at
quarter-time.
Green's three first-half goals and two each to Jurrah and Lynden Dunn helped the
Demons take the advantage late in the second term.
Dunn's first goal was an amazing soccer kick aimed at a loose ball from 40 metres
out, but North kicked the last three goals of the half to move 12 points clear at
the break.
The Kangaroos led by 18 points early in the third quarter before Jurrah slammed on
three quick goals and Dunn produced another ripper with a left-foot snap as the
Demons surged to a two-point lead at three-quarter time.
North defender Leigh Harding and Melbourne's Nathan Jones both left the field with
apparent rib injuries after heavy clashes.
