MPI rises for 9th straight month in July
BANGKOK, Aug 28 – The Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) in July rose for the ninth consecutive month by 13.16 per cent to 190.22 year on year following a gradual drop from mid-2009 to 2010 due to the global economic crisis, according to the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).
OIE Director-General Suttinee Poopaka revealed the overall production utilisation averaged 62.40 per cent during the month.
Key industries that contributed to the continued increase of the MPI include vehicle, electronic parts, air-conditioners, and rubber products.
Vehicle production and distribution increased 71.8 and 73.1 per cent year on year due to the improved local and global economic conditions.
She said the local vehicle market had benefited from the inauguration of new car models by carmakers and higher purchasing power of people in the agricultural sector due to rising farm product prices.
Additionally, the popularity of newly-launched international standard eco-cars had boosted market sentiment.
As for vehicle exports, she said, operators had adjusted the production plan to accommodate the expansion of export markets.
This year, the vehicle production is expected to reach 1.6 million units, up 60.1 per cent from last year’s. Of this, 700,000 units are for local sale, up 27.53 per cent and 900,000 units for export, a surge of 68.05 per cent.
The electronic parts production and distribution in July increased 28.9 and 27.5 per cent respectively in tandem with the global economic recovery and the increased demand in the IT and electrical appliance markets. Key export destinations include China and the United States.
Air-conditioner production and distribution surged 64.2 and 55.6 per cent consecutively since manufacturers placed new products on the market continually focusing on the development of energy-saving and environmentally friendly products. (MCOT online news)
