PM urges Commerce Ministry to oversee product price hike

BANGKOK, Aug 28 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday asked the Commerce Ministry to closely supervise consumer product price rises and to bring the issue for consideration at the economic ministers meeting next week.

He said the ministry was assigned to oversee the cost of each kind of product to see whether their prices should be raised because during a certain period of time the government asked producers not to raise the prices of their consumer products to prevent impacts on the public.

The premier noted that the current inflation rate remained at a controllable level although it is expected to rise given the National Economic and Social Development Board’s latest estimate.

On mounting concerns over the strengthening of the baht, which might lead to a speculation, he said the Bank of Thailand would deal with the matter and determine how to raise the interest rate to contain the baht hike. (MCOT online news)
