Thai PM orders tightened security after explosion in capital

BANGKOK, Aug 27 - Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday ordered security agencies to be vigilant after the second explosion near the duty-free shopping complex King Power in Soi Rangnam on Thursday night, saying Bangkok will be the last location where the current state of emergency will be lifted.

Last night’s incident is similar to others happening earlier in the capital. And it is the second time the complex have been targeted, the prime minister said.

Yesterday's explosion in Soi Rangnam, which severely wounded a security guard, occurred as Bangkok as well as six other provinces still under the state of emergency decree.

Mr Abhisit said the lifting of the enforcement of emergency decree must be reviewed by each province and it is definitely that the capital of Bangkok will be the last province in which the state of emergency will be lifted.

However, he said the overall situation is returning to normalcy but after the lifting of the emergency decree in several provinces, more political movements
intensified. Those persons who want to create chaos will not gather but they scattered to carry it out in separate areas.

Meanwhile, the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) initially concluded that the explosion near the duty-free King Power complex was initially identifies as an M79 grenade, Sansern Kaewkamnerd, CRES spokesman said during the CRES meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.

Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan as the CRES deputy director ordered the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to check all surveillance cameras in the areas and fix those that are not working.

Mr Suthep during the meeting assigned the police to focus on intelligence in areas in which possible attacks may occur.

The deputy premier however denied commenting whether he believed the incident is linked to any political faction, saying he is awaiting investigation results and has instructed concerned security officials to closely monitor the situation.

The latest grenade attack at Soi Rangnam is the second attack in almost two months after on July 30, an unidentified garbage scavenger was critically wounded when a grenade hidden in a rubbish bin near the duty-free shopping centre exploded. (MCOT online news)
