Deputy PM Suthep: Rangnam bombing aimed at causing chaos
BANGKOK, Aug 27 - Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Friday that a grenade explosion near a duty-free shopping complex in the Thai capital last night was aimed at causing chaos.
Police said the M79 grenade fragments were found at the explosion scene.
Mr Suthep commented after the Thursday night explosion near King Power duty-free shopping centre on Rangnam Road, which occurred only a few metres from the site of an earlier grenade blast less than a month ago while Bangkok is still under emergency decree.
Newin Chidchob, banned politician and de facto leader of the Bhumjaithai party, a coalition partner of the Democrat-led government, also reportedly had dinner at a restaurant in King Power Shopping complex Thursday evening.
Mr Newin and King Power owner Vichai Raksriaksorn who runs the duty free outlet at Suvarnabhumi airport have close links.
Jetsada Jankrajang, 24-year-old security guard, was seriously wounded by the grenade explosion on Rangnam Road near the King Power duty-free shopping complex in central Bangkok.
He was sent to Rajavithi Hospital with shrapnel wounds on his head and body.
He remains in critical condition but is no longer in a coma.
The deputy premier however denied to comment whether he believed the incident is linked to any political faction, saying he's awaiting investigation result and has instructed concerned security officials to closely monitor the situation.
Mr Suthep added he has not yet talked with Mr Newin after the bombing.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Santhan Chayanont called an urgent meeting of investigation team Friday morning and revealed that police believe the M79 grenade was fired froma high building on Sri Ayudhya Road, possibly the Siam City Hotel.
Following criticism over police security measures after the second bombing attacks near near King Power shopping centre in less than a month, Gen Santan reasserted police are always on high alert to maintain order, but said that agitators are well-prepared.
On July 30, an unidentified garbage scavenger was critically wounded when a grenade hidden in a rubbish bin near the duty-free shopping centre exploded, and remains hospitalised in critical condition. A suspect named Sorathian Singkanya was arrested for alleged involvement last month's grenade incident but he denied the charges.
Pol Maj-Gen Wichai Sangprapai, commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 1, said police detained a male suspect on a motorcycle who had stopped to talk with the victim before the explosion. He was later released as being intoxicated and with no connection to the incident.
Gen Wichai added the bomb victim remains in critical condition, but doctors successfully removed shrapnel from his head. (MCOT online news)
