PM: no need to raise VAT to support welfare state

BANGKOK, Aug 27 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday reiterated his view that the government need not increase the value-added tax to bring money to finance the emergence of the welfare state.

He made the remark in response to Thailand Development Research Institute’s suggestion the government raise VAT if it wanted to establish a state-supported welfare system in the country.

Mr Abhisit said he wanted to reiterate that the planned welfare system would not be fully supported by the state, but that the people would be encouraged to participate in the establishment of the system.

He said the government had just extended the 7 per cent VAT collection for another two years, so he saw no need to reverse the decision for now.

“It should be understood that the current 7 per cent VAT collection is imposed only temporarily, but the rate has been already adopted for 12-13 years," the prime minister said.

"It has been so long that some people forget it is just a temporary measure,” Mr Abhisit said. (MCOT online news)
