Commerce Ministry to accelerate increasing border trade with Malaysia
BANGKOK, Aug 27 – Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot on Thursday revealed the ministry will step up its efforts to increase the value of border trade with Thailand's neighboring countries, particularly Malaysia, by at least 10 per cent a year from 2010 through 2014.
Initially, he said senior ministry officials had discussed the move with private business executives and state officials of Malaysia's five northernmost states, Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, and Penang, which share common borders with Thailand’s Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun, and Songkla provinces respectively.
The proposed border trade enhancement had drawn a good response and full support from the Malaysian government as it could boost the bilateral trade ties and investment cooperation between the two countries.
Malaysia has the highest border trade value with Thailand. In the first seven months of this year, border trade between the neighbors surged by 38 per cent to more than Bt400 billion in value.
The increase was attributed by ASEAN cooperation to reduce trade barriers by establishing the ASEAN Free Trade Area, which results in a cut in tariffs imposed by each member country to 0-5 per cent. (MCOT online news)
