House approves 2011 budget bill
BANGKOK, Aug 25 - Thailand's House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the second and third readings of the Bt2.07 trillion 2011 Budget Bill by a vote of 253-178 with 14 abstentions and 21 decided not to cast votes.
The vote was called at 12.30pm after five days of debate, August 18-20 and August 24-25.
The bill will be forwarded to the Senate for further deliberation.
After the passage of the bill, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva thanked the budget deliberation committee and all members of parliament for passing the bill.
He pledged the government would spend the budget in the utmost interest of the public and country with a fairness and transparency.
The House of Representatives had earlier passed the draft bill on the national budget in its first reading on May 27 and a 63-member panel had been set up to scrutinise the bill before it was submitted to the House in the second and third readings.
The 2011 budget bill has been set at Bt2.07 trillion, an increase of 21.8 per cent, or Bt370 billion, over that of the 2010 budget. The government has set a deficit of Bt420 billion in this budget, which will be implemented from October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011.
The prime minister said earlier that the deficit budget was aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth and laying the foundation of the country in terms of economy, security and reducing social inequality. (MCOT online news)
