Jetstar's Buchanan should resign: pilots
Jetstar boss Bruce Buchanan should stand down over plans to outsource pilot jobs to
Singapore, pilots say.
Almost 400 pilots voted unanimously that they had no confidence in Mr Buchanan at an
extraordinary meeting in Sydney on Monday.
The meeting, which was organised by the Australian and International Pilots
Association, was attended by pilots from both Qantas Airways brands, Jetstar and
Qantas.
Pilots from Virgin, Tiger and Emirates also attended the meeting.
Association president Barry Jackson said the proposal, which was part of Jetstar's
plans to expand into Asia and Europe, threatened the employment of Australian pilots
and should be revoked.
"It was a well-attended meeting and they've expressed no confidence in (Mr
Buchanan)," Mr Jackson said.
"Pilots from across the different airlines understood that Jetstar's proposal to
offshore jobs to Singapore had implications for other airlines."
The proposal also pits pilots against each other to secure jobs, he said.
Jetstar delivered a record profit of $131 million this year.
Mr Jackson said the pilots were also calling for any new pilots to be signed to the
enterprise agreement and not employed under private contracts under Singapore law.
There were no plans for industrial action despite reports that some pilots had
called for a strike on Tuesday, he said.
