VLADIVOSTOK, August 24 (Itar-Tass) - The active phase of the exercise
of borderguards from five countries "Pacific Security Cooperation" started
on Tuesday at the Peter the Great Bay near Vladivostok, Itar-Tass learnt
at the press centre of the Borderguard Agency for the Primorye Territory.
According to the exercise scenario, an alarm signal went off on the
Kondor ship, flying the Panamanian flag. An appropriate report from the
South Korean coordination centre was received by colleagues from Russia
and China.
The received information said that the boat was involved in illegal
activities, including transportation of illegal migrants, and there was a
group of unidentified armed people aboard the ship, apart from the crew.
To look for and detain the transgressor, Vladivostok organised an
international group, consisting of the Russian coastguard boat Primorye,
two ships of the Chinese public security service and a vessel of the South
Korean marine police agency.
At the same time, the second group, consisting of a US coastguard
ship, a vessel of the Japanese Marine Safety Agency and a Russian
coastguard ship, is looking for another transgressor - the Tetis boat,
flying the US flag. According to the exercise scenario, it was captured by
unidentified armed people. The group will start joint actions on August 25.
The large-scale exercise is the key event of the week-long forum of
marine borderguards of Russia, Japan, the US, China and South Korea, which
opened in Vladivostok on Monday. Its task is to establish contacts of
border agencies in tackling common tasks: struggle against poaching and
smuggling, sea terrorists and aid to ship crews in distress.
The exercise will last two days. In the evening of August 25, ships of
member countries will come to Vladivostok. The crews will be guests of the
city, visit sights of interest in the capital city of the Primorye
Territory and will participate in sport competitions.
