Thai envoy returns to Phnom Penh to resume post
BANGKOK, Aug 24 - Thai ambassador to Cambodia Prasas Prasasvinitchai
returns to Cambodia Tuesday and expects to resume his duties within the next two weeks.
Mr Prasas left Bangkok via Thai Airways International flight TG584 bound for Phnom Penh at 6.10pm.
The Thai envoy said he would coordinate with Cambodian authorities to seek a royal audience to present his credentials to King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace. The process was expected to finish within two weeks and was necessary before he could officially resume his duties.
Mr Prasas said he was not worried as he was ready to resume his duties and had already prepared his work plan. He will catch up with serving Thai diplomatic personnel about urgent tasks to be carried out.
The Thai ambassador said he would subsequently pay a courtesy call on the Cambodian Foreign Minister and said he believed that bilateral relations will gradually improve.
He denied commenting on the disputed areas near the Preah Vihear temple, saying it was the issue to be resolved through talks by leaders of the two countries.
The Cambodian ambassador is expected to arrive in Thailand at 6pm Wednesday.
The reinstatement of ambassadors of the two countries came after ousted former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's resignation as economic adviser and adviser to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday.
Tensions between the two neighbouring kingdoms flared after Cambodia appointed the convicted Thai ex-premier as its economic adviser and said it would not extradite Mr Thaksin if asked by Thailand to do so.
Thailand retaliated against Cambodia by recalling its ambassador to Phnom Penh and reviewing cooperation programmes with Cambodia.
Cambodia, however, ignored Thailand's stance, and recalled its ambassador to Bangkok in reciprocation.
Mr Thaksin, ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006, was sentenced by Thailand’s Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions to a two-year prison term in absentia for conflict of interest in a Bangkok land purchase case. Mr Thaksin jumped bail and fled the country. (MCOT online news)
