NEW DELHI, August 24 (Itar-Tass) - The Indian authorities expressed
the hope that they would be able to resolve the situation in Haripur, West
Bengal, and keep a site for the nuclear power plant in Haripur that Russia
planned to build.
"The Russians are concerned about the situation but we have told them
that we are still upbeat about it," the Times of India newspaper quoted a
senior government official as saying on Tuesday.
Last year Russia's state-run nuclear power corporation Rosatom
received a construction site for the nuclear power plant in Haripur, one
of the three sites in India, where Russia plans to build up to 20 nuclear
power units.
However, the local fishermen community supported by opposition parties
in West Bengal continues to protest against the plant's construction.
Rosatom asked the Department of Atomic Energy to allot it another site
for the nuclear power plant construction instead of that in Haripur.
In compliance with Russian-Indian agreements on cooperation in civil
nuclear power, from four to six nuclear power units are planned to be
built in Haripur, West Bengal.
In Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu Rosatom plans to build six nuclear power
units.
By 2020 India hopes to increase the power generating capacity of its
nuclear power plants almost by five times - up to 20,000 MW.
