Presence of Turkey, Brazil in nuclear talks, useful: FM spokesman

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said here on Tuesday that presence of Turkey and Brazil in Iran-Vienna Group talks will be useful.

Talking to reporters during his weekly press briefing, he said presence of Turkey and Brazil, as two independent countries which played a key role regarding the Tehran Declaration, in talks between the Islamic Republic and member states of the Vienna Group on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program will be fruitful.

The Vienna Group includes representatives from US, Russia, France and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Since the next talks will be focused on fuel swap, the Tehran Declaration would be the base for bilateral talks, Mehman-Parast added.

On the future meeting of Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iran-Vienna Group negotiations, he reiterated that the dates of the talks have not yet been fixed.

He said Tehran has announced its readiness for talks with the Vienna Group on fuel swap.

Mehman-Parast added that the meeting between Ms Ashton and Jalili will probably be held in late September or early October as formerly announced.

Rejecting claims made by several Western officials that Tehran must halt uranium enrichment after the fuel loading process has been carried out at the Bushehr nuclear power plant successfully, he said such requests are surprising.

The spokesman added that when a nuclear plant starts its activities, it needs fuel and therefore enrichment process is needed for providing fuel to that plant.

He noted that the Islamic Republic is planned to increase the number of its nuclear power plants in the future, stressing that the number of country’s nuclear power plants for producing electricity should be increased by 20 times.
