Port Power beat Melbourne by 29 points
Matthew Primus added to his compelling case to win Port Adelaide's coaching job with
a 29-point AFL triumph over Melbourne on Sunday.
Port won 17.10 (112) to 11.17 (83) at AAMI Stadium, moving to 10th on the ladder as
Primus posted his fourth win from six games as caretaker coach.
Melbourne's Liam Jurrah leapt into mark of the year favouritism with a soaring grab
during his eye-catching four-goal game.
But Port burst open the game in a third-quarter blitz, with Jay Schulz kicking four
goals and Travis Boak and Robbie Gray capping fine games with three majors.
Jurrah gracefully floated over two talls to mark nine minutes into the third term,
his conversion bringing the Demons within 11 points of Port.
But the Power's response to Jurrah's spectacular feat was emphatic: seven of the
next eight goals laid the foundation for their ninth win of the year.
Melbourne, in captain James McDonald's 250th match, dominated possession in the
opening half but errant goal kicking proved costly .
Port led 8.2 to 5.10 at the long break, despite losing forward Brett Ebert to a knee
injury and having 71 less disposals than the Demons.
Power onballer Boak and small forward Gray were constant threats, the latter also
lodging a stunning highlight with a dribbled 30 metre goal, when pinned on the
boundary line in the second quarter.
The third term was punctuated by Jurrah's remarkable mark but Port then kicked five
consecutive goals to take command.
Melbourne's cause was made more difficult due to the late withdrawal of Colin Sylvia
with a virus, replaced by 10-gamer Rohan Bail.
