Saints down Tigers, Cousins injured
Jack Riewoldt booted seven goals in a losing side as St Kilda overpowered Richmond
to score a hard-fought 21-point win in their AFL clash at Etihad Stadium.
Leigh Montagna with 42 possessions and Nick Dal Santo were dominant as third-placed
St Kilda broke clear in the final term with four goals to Richmond's two to win
17.13 (115) to Richmond's 14.10 (94).
Richmond's Riewoldt extended his lead in the Coleman Medal to eight goals with his
7.1 and has 75 goals for the season, while Justin Koschitzke had a solid build-up to
the finals series with a five-goal effort for the Saints.
Controversial Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins gathered 20 possessions in his
penultimate AFL match but spent the last quarter on the bench with a suspected
hamstring strain, raising doubts over his farewell game next week.
Cousins later rated his chances as "50-50" to play against Port Adelaide.
In-form defender Brendon Goddard was also prominent for St Kilda and took a
spectacular high mark in the second quarter, surely one of the marks of the year.
It was St Kilda's 13th consecutive win over the Tigers but came after a tight battle
for the first three quarters.
Both sides had 10 goals on the board by halftime with the Saints just five points
ahead.
The Tigers led by 17 points late in the first quarter and the Saints surged ahead by
the same margin at the 27-minute mark of the second term before goals from
Richmond's Jake King and Trent Cochin.
The Saints extended their lead to 12 points at three-quarter time but Dal Santo's
two last-quarter goals helped steady the Saints.
St Kilda travel to Adelaide to play the Crows next Saturday while Richmond's season
ends with a home game against Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium the following day.
