Gillard 'in talks' on Timor solution

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been in touch with East Timorese authorities on
Thursday in her bid to establish a regional refugee processing centre in the island
enclave.
"The government of East Timor has confirmed as recently as today that they are open
to continuing the dialogue with the government," Ms Gillard told the Nine Network.
Ms Gillard did not promise a centre would be built in East Timor but committed to
continuing talks with Dili.
"I am confident that the East Timor government has said to us they're up for the
dialogue," she said.
"Yep, we've got to conclude the dialogue. I'm not going to tell people untruths in
this campaign. There's no quick fix here.
"I'm determined that we get a processing centre and I will be doing everything I can
to achieve that."
Earlier, Ms Gillard said she would not promise Australian backing for a lucrative
gas plant to sway East Timor into agreeing to host the centre.
The government of East Timor is keen to have a processing plant located on its
territory onshore.
Ms Gillard said such commercial decisions should be made in the best interest of
shareholders.
