PM expects economy to show growth over 10% in first half of 2010
BANGKOK, Aug 20 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday said that Thailand's economic performance figures remained sound in the first half of this year with the economy expected to grow more than 10 per cent.
Speaking of his discussion with National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) Secretary-General Ampon Kittiampon, Mr Abhisit said the agency chief briefed him about the latest economic growth figures, which are expected to be released on Monday.
The premier said he and Mr Ampon shared a common view that the economy in the first half of this year is likely to show that it expanded by more than 10 per cent, but for the rest of the year, the economy is set to grow at a slower pace.
What should be of concern now is a possible water shortage due to the drought, which could have an impact on the agricultural sector early next year.
The government would attempt to accelerate wrapping up a contingency plan to cope with the problem, he said.
Regarding the Vietnamese government’s decision to devalue the dong, Mr Abhisit said it is the internal problem of Vietnam and believed it would not affect Thailand’s competitiveness. (MCOT online news)
