THIRD ICIS TO FORM COMMON PERCEPTIONS ON CONFLICTS IN MUSLIM WORLD
Jakarta, July 24 (ANTARA) - The third meeting of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) to be held in Jakarta soon is to form common perceptions on conflicts in Islamic countries, a spokesman for the event's organizers said.
To be opened on July 30 and to run until August 1, 2008, the meeting will be attended by some 350 participants from 70 countries and carry the theme "Upholding Islam as Rahmatan li al- `Alamin (blessing for the universe): Peace Building and Conflict Prevention in the Muslim World", KH Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama, the meeting's host, said at a press conference here Friday.
He said perceptions within the Muslim community (ummat) about their conflicts were not the same. "ICIS does not have the power to solve the conflicts but at least the common perceptions expected to be achieved at the conference will result in alternative solutions," he added.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda who attended the press conference said Islam was a religion that loved peace and practiced tolerance.
He said there were misconceptions in the west that associated Islam with violence and acts of terrorism whereas Indonesia rejected firmly the association of a certain religion or culture with acts of terrorism.
Thus, Indonesia was actively cooperating with the international community to fight terrorism, he said, adding the hosting of the ICIS meeting was a second-line diplomatic effort to contribute to world peace and conflict prevention in line with Indonesia's state ideology.
The three main topics of the third ICIS would be Islam and Peace, Anatomy of Conflicts and Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
To be officially opened by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the meeting was also expected to be attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan.
