VP : RESPONSIBILITY FOR SIDOARJO MUDFLOW LOSSES TAKEN OVER BY LAPINDO

Jakarta, July 25 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said PT Lapindo had de facto taken responsibility for the losses suffered by local people by the mudflow in Sidoarjo, East Java.

"Actually, PT Lapindo Brantas has de facto taken over the responsibility," the vice president said when asked about the Lapindo mudflow case here on Friday.

According to the vice president PT Lapindo Brantas had met obligations in the form of financial compensations for the local people's land and buildings that were affected by the mudflow.

Previously, a study by Australia revealed that the mudflow had taken place not because of an earthquake but because of mistakes made during the drilling of an oil or gas well.

The vice president said the government would not depend on the result of a study by other parties or foreign parties.

Kalla said the government was now also conducting a study about the Lapindo case and the results of the study would be known in the near future.
