Opposition seeks to impeach PM, Finance Minister

BANGKOK, Aug 19 -- Thailand's opposition Puea Thai Party on Thursday lodged a complaint to Senate Speaker Prasobsuk Boondech seeking to impeach Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, and a ruling Democrat party MP Sirichoke Sopha for violating Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) regulations.

Puea Thai party listed MP Prakiat Nasimma filed a letter of complaint with more than 140 signatures of Puea Thai Party MPs supporting the move to impeach the trio in relation to their comments on the possibility of buying back shares in Thaicom which runs satellite business for security reasons.

Mr Prakiat accused the government of giving false information to the public with the aim of reaping benefits personally from Thaicom share prices when it had floated the idea to buy back Thaicom shares for Thailand's national security reasons.

Thaicom's share prices had jumped sharply and its trading volume was unusually heavy in response to the news that the Thai government was planning to buy back the satellite business, said the MP.

Puea Thai Party claimed that two politicians had made profits of Bt300 million from the Thaicom stock price manipulation.

Mr Sirichok earlier denied the accusation but admitted that he and Mr Korn had visited Singapore to discuss with senior Temasek Holdings management ways for Thailand to buy back shares in Thaicom.

The move by the prime minister, his close aide Mr Sirichok and the finance minister could be considered violating the Stock Exchange of Thailand law and could be impeached and removed from office under the Constitution, said the opposition MP.

Mr Prasobsuk said after receiving the letter that the officials would examine the list of signatures which should be completed within 15 days according to the law.

Thaicom is a subsidiary of Shin Corp. Singapore-based Temasek Holdings bought Shin Corp, the family business of now fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006.

Thaicom Pcl, founded in 1991 with a 30-year build-transfer-operate concession from Thailand’s Ministry of Transport and Communications to operate the country’s first communications satellite. The concession expires in 2021.

Mr Abhisit earlier admitted the government would like to acquire Thaicom, which is now operating both the iPSTAR and Thaicom 5 satellites, from Temasek because the satellite operation had national-security implications. He, however, denied the opposition's accusation. (MCOT online news)
