Cyprus, RF mark 50th anniversary of establishing dipl' rel'ns.

.

NICOSIA, August 18 (Itar-Tass) - The Republic of Cyprus and Russia on
Wednesday mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between the two countries.
The independence of Cyprus was ceremonially proclaimed on August 16,
1960, with the first president of the republic, Archbishop Makarios,
immediately sending telegrammes to the leaders of the world powers,
notifying them about the event.
The Soviet Union was one of the first to respond to the news. On the
same day it stated recognition of the young republic and announced its
readiness to establish diplomatic relations with it and exchange
diplomatic missions. Two days later, on August 18, President Makarios, in
a reply message, thanked the leadership of the Soviet Union for the
recognition of the just proclaimed state. This is why it is precisely this
day that is reckoned the date of the establishment of diplomatic relations
between the two countries.
Moscow rendered all-round support to the young republic. The relations
that were established have been of sincere and friendly nature ever since.
Nowadays Russia and the Republic of Cyprus act as partners and
like-minded countries both in bilateral contacts and in international
affairs. The relations between the two countries have stood the test of
time and continue to develop successfully in many fields.
Vyacheslav Shumsky, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to
Cyprus, has told Itar-Tass in an interview, "This jubilee is an important
event in the life of our two countries and peoples that are brought
together by the similarity of their international and political views of
the world, and I would even say by their attitude to the world. We look at
world developments from common positions. The centuries-long ties of
friendship linking Russia and Cyprus have been built on a solid spiritual
and historical foundation".
However, Cyprus, upon gaining independence, has been unable to resolve
the conflict that was bursting out between Greek Cypriots and Turkish
Cypriots. The conflict developed into bloody clashes. In1974, as a result
of the tragic events, the country was divided, with one-third of its
territory finding itself under foreign occupation. For decades the
Cypriots have been striving to achieve a reunification of the island.
Direct talks between the leaders of the two communities on a settlement of
the conflict were launched in September 2008 under the auspices of the
United Nations.
Russia has been always siding with the people of Cyprus in its
struggle for the country's reunification through a just, comprehensive and
durable settlement of the Cyprus problem on the strength of the relevant
resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Moscow supports the current negotiating process and proceeds from the
assumption that the Cypriots themselves must decide on how to arrange
their living in a state that would be common to the Greek and Turkish
Cypriots, without any pressure or interference from the outside or
imposition of an artificial timeframe for the reaching of accords.

.Over 55,000 Primorye residents get low-fare air tickets.

VLADIVOSTOK, August 18 (Itar-Tass) - Over 55,000 residents of the
Primorsky (maritime) Territory (PT), or Primorye, for short, have already
availed themselves of the government programme to ensure affordability of
air flights to the European part of Russia this year. They account for 42
percent of the quota assigned to the PT, an official at the PT department
for industry and transport has told Itar-Tass.
Flights to Moscow are most popular among PT residents. In all, this
year, almost 133,000 PT residents will be able to avail themselves of the
above mentioned government programme.
Low-fare tickets for flights to Vladivostok are also sold in northern
cities, such as Anadyr, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yakutsk, Magadan, and
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. This will enable the residents of the northern regions
of the Far East, who cannot afford vacationing on the Black Sea coast, to
have holidays on the beaches of PT south.
The season of low-fare tickets will continue until October 31. The
government has allocated 2,500 million
roubles
for these purposes this year. Young people under 23 inclusive and
pensioners above 60 years of age will be able to buy low-fare air tickets.
