TOKYO, August 18 (Itar-Tass) - Japan's ex-prime minister Yukio
Hatoyama will visit Russia early in September as a personal representative
of the Japanese prime minister. Hatoyama told reporters in Beijing on
Wednesday that in particular, he will take part in the World Political
Forum in Yaroslavl in that capacity.
Hatoyama also said that he intended to discuss with the Russian
leadership bilateral relations, including talks on the signing of a peace
treaty. "When I was prime minister, I left unfinished work on the problem
of the Northern Territories," he said. "I would like to open the door to
its settlement," he added.
Yukio Hatoyama earlier headed the Japan-Russia Society, and he has
vast contacts in Moscow. In the mid 1950s his grandfather, also prime
minister at that time, signed a joint declaration with the Soviet Union,
which put an end to the state of war between the two countries and settled
all issues of the post-war settlement with the exception of the problem of
the South Kuriles.
Hatoyama's son Kiichiro Hatoyama currently works at Higher Business
School at Moscow University.
