ISLAMABAD, August 17 (Itar-Tass) -- Issues of regional security, the
situation in Afghanistan, as well as measures to combat drug trafficking
are expected to be in the focus of attention of talks between President
Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev,
other participants in a four-party meeting which will be held in Sochi on
August 18, spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry Abdul Basit told
ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.
The presidents of Afghanistan and Tajikistan Hamid Karzai and Emomali
Rakhmon will also take part in the meeting.
"Relations between Pakistan and Russia are dynamically developing
now," Abdul Basit stressed. "We hope that the trip of Pakistani President
Asif Zardari to the summit in Sochi will promote a further growth of
Pakistani-Russian interaction and help solve many topical problems of
regional security."
According to the spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, at the
summit in Sochi, Zardari will try to convince his interlocutors of joining
the efforts of the international community to render aid to Pakistan hit
by heavy floods as soon as possible.
"Unfortunately," Abdul Basit said, "the stay of the Pakistani leader
in Russia will be reduced to the minimum since Asif Zardari has to be with
the Pakistani people at the so complex for our country moment."
The first similar four-party meeting with the participation of the
presidents of Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan was held in
Dushanbe in summer 2009.
