Iran president declares law on preservation of nuclear achievements
TEHRAN, Aug. 17 (MNA) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday declared for implementation of a law according to which the government is obliged to continue enriching nuclear fuel up to the purity level of 20 percent to power medical reactor.
The law on “preserving peaceful nuclear achievements” had been previously ratified by the Majlis and endorsed by the Guardian Council.
The law calls for the government to invest in technical nuclear fields in order to attain self-sufficiency.
According to the approval, the government will also have to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency only within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty regulations.
Therefore, it has to reject the requests made beyond the NPT regulations.
Iran’s nuclear activities are constantly monitored by the UN nuclear watchdog. However, Tehran has come under unprecedented pressure by the West for its nuclear program.
The U.S. and some of its European allies want Iran to forgo its right to nuclear enrichment, a demand which goes against the NPT.
Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is solely intended for civilian uses and dismissed claims by the U.S. that it is seeking nuclear weapons.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a decree declaring production, stockpile and use of weapons of mass destruction as haram (banned under Islamic sharia).
