US, KOREAN DOCTORS PERFORM HARE-LIP OPERATIONS IN KUPANG
Kupang, July 25 (ANTARA) - Nine plastic surgeons from the United Sates and South Korea performed hare-lip and cleft-palate operations at WZ Johanes General Hospital in the East Nusa Tenggara provincial city of Kupang from Wednesday to Friday (July 23-25).
Local health office spokesman Dr Dominggus Sarambu said the seven surgeons from South Korea and two others from the United States were in their work assisted by a number of local doctors and paramedics.
"They performed the cleft-lip and cleft-palate surgeries from Wednesday until today," Dominggus Sarambu said here on Friday.
He said the surgeries were conducted under the auspices of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial and Kupang municipal administrations which had obtained the foreign assistance through the intermediary offices of Pastor Kim of South Korea.
Dominggus said the operations were done on 54 patients from the districts of Kupang, Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS), and Timor Tengah Utara (TTU) free of charge.
Meanwhile, the operation committee chairman, Dr Frans Humalesi, said one of the 54 patients, identified as Fadly Alexander Matutina (4) would undergo special surgery in South Korea.
Frans said Fadly was born with his mouth open and without ears and therefore he was unable to speak or hear.
"The team of doctors from South Korea agreed to take Fadly to their country for special surgery," Frans Humalesi said.
