Dutton not as confident about Dickson
Opposition frontbencher Peter Dutton's confidence about retaining his outer Brisbane
seat of Dickson at the next federal election appears to be flagging.
The marginal electorate, held by Mr Dutton since 2001, is now notionally Labor by
0.8 per cent following a redistribution.
The opposition health spokesman said late last month he thought he could hold the
seat, but was more circumspect on Monday.
"It's certainly not in the bag by any stretch," he told Sky News.
"But there is a positive feeling on the ground, because as I say, people are angry
about a government that has wasted debt."
Mr Dutton said Labor had run a "very negative" campaign in Dickson, and voters -
particularly in the key states of Queensland and New South Wales - were turning off
the government because it kept making promises that were undeliverable.
"People believe I think that Labor at a federal level now really has the same smack
of incompetence that what we see at a state level," he said.
However, Mr Dutton could face his own backlash from voters, unhappy that he tried to
jump to the safer Gold Coast seat of McPherson, only to fail to win preselection.
