In Moscow, hundreds of Indian families defied the
acrid smog from nearby wildfires and gathered at the embassy
compound to celebrate the Independence Day.

national anthem, joined by members of the local Indian
community.

address to the nation delivered on the eve of the Independence
Day.
Similar flag hoisting ceremonies were held at the
Indian Consulate Generals in St Petersburg and Vladivostok.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in his messages to
Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh lauded India's
achievements over the years of independence.

community, your country plays an important positive role on
the world scene," Medvedev said in his messages to the Indian
leadership, excerpts from which were released here by Kremlin.

Independence Day as they gathered at the Indian Embassy this
morning.

flag at a function attended by about 350 persons including
