Russian delegation discusses in Pyongyang coop with NKorea.

15/8 Tass 68

PYONGYANG, August 15 (Itar-Tass) - Chairman of the presidium of the
Supreme People's Assembly (parliament) Kim Yong Nam and the Russian
delegation, led by Minister of Regional Development Viktor Basargin, now
on a one-day visit here, discussed ways of developing relations between
North Korea and Russia at their meeting on Sunday.
The delegation handed over to the parliament head a gift for general
secretary of the Korean Workers' Party and chairman of the State Defence
Committee Kim Jong-Il.
As chairman of the Russian part of the intergovernmental commission on
trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, Viktor Basargin
held talks with his Korean counterpart, Foreign Trade Minister Ri Ryong
Nam.
The sides discussed measures to develop cooperation in these spheres.
Speaking in an interview with Itar-Tass, head of the Russian delegation
called "resumption of economic relations, as well as preparation for the
fifth meeting of the intergovernmental commission" the main topics of the
talks.
The sides also centred on regional cooperation, including the question
on inviting labour force to Russia from North Korea. The minister conceded
that economic cooperation between the two countries now regrettably
"leaves much to be desired".
The Russian delegation participated in festivities on the occasion of
the North Korean national holiday - the 65th anniversary of Korea's
Liberation from the yoke of Japanese invaders.
In the morning, the delegation along with staff members of the Russian
embassy and representatives from foreign diplomatic missions accredited to
Pyongyang, laid down wreaths to the Liberation monument at the Moranbong
Park in Pyongyang. The obelisk had been erected in honour of the Soviet
troops, fallen in battles for the freedom of Korean people in August 1945.
Flowers and wreaths were also laid down at the statue of DPRK founder
Kim Il-Sung as well as at the monuments to Korean citizens, who died in
the war against Japanese invaders, including those buried on the
Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery on Mt. Taesong.
