15/8 Tass 49

PYONGYANG, August 15 (Itar-Tass) - North Korea mounted this Sunday
festivities on the occasion of the national holiday - the 65th anniversary
of Korea's liberation from Japanese invaders.
The day started with a wreath-laying ceremony to monuments of the
country's founder Kim Il-Sung. The country staged numerous rallies and
gala meetings, devoted to the contribution of the first and "eternal"
president to the struggle of Korean people against invaders.
According to official data published in North Korea, Japanese
exterminated some one million Koreans and deported for forced labour eight
million people during the 40-odd years of their rule.
A Russian delegation, led by Minister of Regional Development Viktor
Basargin, arrived in Pyongyang to participate in the festivities on the
occasion of this date.
In the morning, the delegation along with staffers of the Russian
embassy and representatives from foreign diplomatic missions, accredited
to Pyongyang, laid wreaths to the Liberation monument at the Moranbong
Park in the capital. This obelisk was erected in honour of Soviet troops,
fallen in battles for the liberation of Korean people in August 1945.
Korean and Russian entertainers staged a gala concert in Pyongyang.
The concert programme included masterpieces of world classics, works by
Korean and Russian composers as well as pop and folk songs of the two
countries.
Concert participants included chief conductor of the 21st Century
Orchestra of Moscow Pavel Ovsyannikov, Bolshoi Theatre soloist Oleg Kulko,
pop singer Felix Tsarikati and wonderful bass singer Vladimir Yarovitsyn.
"Music brings the peoples of the two countries closer," Ovsyannikov,
who conducted a Korean orchestra performance, said in an interview with
Itar-Tass.
