PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION IN BOTSWANA
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ A Mongolian parliamentary delegation paid a visit August 9 to the Republic of Botswana. They have met Mr. Kenneth Matambo, Botswana's Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. It has been reported by the Mmegi Online Agency of Botswana.
The Mongolian MPs, among whom were the members of the Standing committee on budget, studied Botswana's experience in managing revenue being gained from the mining sector. They also got au fait with the mining and financial policies of Botswana.
The Minister Matambo briefed about his country. It became independent in 1966, was one of the poorest 25 countries in the world, he said and added that the governmental budget was based on allowance from the UK.
According to him, Botswana has managed to start its economic development after having discovered deposits of diamond, and spent revenue from the deposits for the infrastructure, water, health, public education and road net. The country also developed its agriculture as a priority sphere. Thanks to these strategies, Botswana's economy sharply increased from 1970s through 1990s.
The revenue from the diamond deposits has increased through times. The country has saved some parts of the revenue for the future.
Botswana's Minister said that there is no need to be excited by revenue from the mineral sector and advised the Mongolia MPs that they should make investments to the economy instead of waste benefits of the mining.
