Ban : UN to mobilize resources for floods-hit Pakistan

Islamabad, Aug 16, IRNA - The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Sunday met Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and said that UN is trying to fully mobilize all possible resources to help Pakistan.
“My visit will send a message of gravity of situation in Pakistan,” the UN Secretary General said in meeting with Gilani, the Prime Minister's office said.
Ban Ki-moon said he came here to personally express solidarity with Pakistan, a PM office statement said.
The UN Secretary General said that he wants to see what happened and what can be done.
The Prime Minister briefed the UN Secretary General about the damage, the statement said. He told Ban Ki-moon that all political forces are united to help the people at this time.
He thanked the Secretary General about the immediate needs of Pakistan which includes shelter, food, medical supplies and water and sanitation. He said that challenges before the government are to stop epidemic and rehabilitation of the affected people.
Earlier on his arrival in Islamabad he said that he will report to the General Assembly on Thursday about his visit to mobilize all necessary assistance.
“I hope that with courage and fortitude, the government of Pakistan and people will overcome the crises in near future,” the UN Secretary General said.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Interior Minister Rehman Malik received the UN Secretary-General on arrival at the Chaklala military air base near Islamabad.
Pakistan’s envoy to the UN Hussain Haroon is accompanying the UN Secretary-General.
The visit comes days after the UN launched appeal for $460 million to help Pakistan tackle the needs of flood-affected families.
Ban Ki-moon will also meet President Asif Ali Zardari and will visit fllod-affected areas later Sunday./end
