Titans into second after beating Cowboys
Gold Coast's grand old man Preston Campbell defied illness and a gallant Cowboys
comeback to put the Titans into second place on the NRL ladder on Saturday night.
The 33-year-old Campbell's yellow headgear appeared to bob up everywhere at Skilled
Park as he sealed a topsy-turvy 37-18 victory over North Queensland.
The Coast appeared to have the game locked up at halftime leading 19-0 but the
visitors came storming back after the break to set the stage for a tight finish.
The Cowboys scored three converted tries in 16 minutes for the scoreline to read
19-18 and have the 14,032 Coast fans extremely concerned.
However the livewire fullback Campbell sealed the result by laying the platform for
two tries in three minutes.
Prop Luke Bailey and tireless backrower Mark Minichiello were the eventual
recipients of Campbell's spark to put the game in Gold Coast's keeping.
With three rounds remaining the Titans now sit just one win behind pacesetters St
George Illawarra on the ladder after their fourth straight victory.
Campbell was only cleared to take part on match eve after being bedridden with a
virus during the week, but played with his usual verve and vigour as the Coast
dominated the opening half.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes captain Scott Prince and hooker Nathan Friend
crossed for soft tries on the left side to break the game open for a 12-0 lead.
Prince then put on a perfect grubber for Steve Michaels to score before slotting a
field goal on the last play for a 19-0 halftime lead.
The Cowboys came out a completely different outfit after the break with veteran Ty
Williams crossing twice in the right corner and energetic utility Anthony Watts
wriggling over from dummy-half when both teams were down to 12 men.
Luke O'Donnell and Friend were both sent to the sin-bin after the pair came to blows
when the Cowboys lock took Campbell in a high tackle.
O'Donnell eventually limped off in the closing stages with a worrying leg injury.
In further bad news for North Queensland, forward Dane Hogan was put on report for a
dangerous tackle on Kevin Gordon which has him in considerable danger of suspension.
Prince, Friend and Minichiello were also among the home side's best in an
encouraging pointer towards the play-offs.
