Sydney beat Dockers in thriller
Sydney kicked two goals in the final three minutes to snatch a pulsating nine-point
AFL victory over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Saturday.
The Dockers appeared to have done enough when Byron Schammer snapped truly and Nick
Suban goaled from a tight angle to give the home side a three-point lead late in the
match.
But a goal to Swans forward Jesse White with just over two minutes remaining and
Ryan O'Keefe's major on the siren gave Sydney the 14.12 (96) to 13.9 (87) win in
front of 34,087 mostly-heartbroken fans.
The third term was a brutal affair that left Sydney with just 20 fit men for most of
the last quarter after Ben McGlynn and Jarred Moore copped heavy knocks to the head.
McGlynn starred in the opening two-and-a-half quarters with three goals and 17
possessions but had his afternoon ended when he slid in for a loose ball and copped
a knee to the head from stand-in Dockers ruckman Zac Clarke.
Moore was stretchered off the field just before the final change when he fell into
Luke McPharlin's knee after running back with the flight of the ball to take a brave
mark.
Moore was able to return late in the final quarter in a term that featured five lead
changes.
Fremantle utility Adam McPhee is likely to come under scrutiny from the match review
panel for his late bump to the back of Paul Bevan in the third quarter.
White endured a dirty day but his late goal could prove vital in Sydney's season.
With the Swans trailing by two points, White ran on to a smart handball from Jarrad
McVeigh and soccered through the goal while holding off Fremantle defender Antoni
Grover.
Sydney's 11th win of the season all-but secures their spot in the finals and lifts
them equal on points with sixth-placed Carlton.
Fremantle remain in fifth spot, one game clear of Carlton and Sydney.
Daniel Hannebery finished with 38 possessions in a starring performance, while
Kieran Jack, Shane Mumford (30 hit-outs, 22 possessions) and McGlynn were vital in
the win.
Rhyce Shaw kept Stephen Hill to just seven possessions, the second straight week the
Dockers midfielder failed to break free of a close tag.
The game was played on Sydney's terms for much of the first half as Fremantle's
renowned run and carry was stifled in the congested spaces.
With injured Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands watching on from the sidelines,
Mumford ensured Sydney's midfielders were well fed at the stoppages, with McGlynn
and Hannebery giving the Swans a flurry of chances.
But the Swans' wayward kicking on goal allowed the Dockers to sneak out to a
three-point lead by quarter-time, with Michael Walters booting two goals for the
term.
Fremantle looked better around the ground in the second quarter but McGlynn and
Hannebery were proving a handful as the Swans kicked three goals to two to take a
two-point lead into half-time.
