Two Italian climbers rescued in Pakistan's Himalayas
Islamabad, July 25 (PPI) - Two Italian climbers stranded on the world's ninth tallest mountain were airlifted to safety Thursday in Pakistan's Himalayas, an air rescue service spokesman said.
Simon Kehrer and Walter Nones were rescued from 8,126-metre Nanga Parbat and would now be transported to Gilgit, from which they are to be flown to Islamabad probably on Friday, Mohammad Ilyas with Askari Aviation said.
Inclement weather on Wednesday had hindered Kehrer and Nones' descent to a safe height for airlift.
The two climbers along with another teammate, Karl Unterkirchner, were attempting a new route when bad weather left them stranded on one of the world's deadliest mountains. Unterkirchner fell to his death in a crevasse.
Another Askari Aviation team was waiting for weather to clear up to locate a British mountaineer, Benjamin Cheek, who went missing on White Horn peak in Hazara region five days ago.
