INDONESIA SHAMED BY CONTINUATION OF EU'S FLIGHT BAN : OBSERVER

Jakarta, July 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has been internationally shamed again by the European Union's refusal to lift its flight ban on all Indonesian airlines, an aviation observer said.

"Indonesia has really been shamed. This is a setback because our country continues to be considered a marginal one incapable of ensuring the flight safety," Bachrul Hakim said when contacted from Jakarta on Thursday evening.

He was commenting the EU's decision to prolong its ban on Indonesian airlines to fly in EU airspace issued in July 2007.

According to him, the flight ban by the European Union remained unchanged because Indonesia's stance as shown by Transporation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal was not clear.

"For the sake of Indonesian sovereignty, there are only two solutions, namely compromise or the opposite. Don't only assess the EU's intention toward politics while there was no courage to take a political decision," he said.

More important now was whether Indonesia sees Europe crucial, minimal from the aspect of flights. Accordingly Indonesia should abide by the EU's intention.

If Indonesia comrinued to fal to take action, the lifting of flight ban by EU would only be a dream, he added.
