SENIOR PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS ADVISED TO RECRUIT YOUNGER RUNNING MATES

Jakarta, July 25 (ANTARA)- Senior presidential candidates ought to recruit much younger running mates aged 35 to 45 years from among the best of their generation, Ichsan Loulembah, a member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) said.

"This is important for the sake of a smooth and orderly regeneration in the country's formal political leadership," Ichsan told Antara here on Thursday in responding to polemics on the matter of the age of presidential candidates prior to the 2009 direct presidential race.

He said several qualified younger political figures could be recruited as vice presidential hopefuls by the older presidential candidates.

"I propose this due to the hot issue of regeration in the national leadership. I think, presidential candidates such as Megawati Soekarnoputri (now most popular), Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (incumbent president), Wiranto, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono, Jusuf Kalla (incumbent vice president) and Prabowo Subianto, need to give younger figures a chance to become vice presidential hopefuls," he said.

The older figures should not neglect this issue and the younger ones should not adopt exhaggerated stances, he said, adding that there were not many political figures qualified for the vice presdiential candidacy.

Megawati, the oldest daughter of Indonesia's first president Soekarno, was the country's president before Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
