S.Leader’s Office announces Thursday as 1st of Ramadhan in Iran

Tehran, August 12, IRNA – The Supreme Leader’s New Moon Observation Headquarters announced here late Wednesday night Thursday August 12th is 1st day of Islam’s holy fasting month of Ramadhan in Iran.

According to the official information website of Supreme Leader’s Office, after surveying the reports received from 110 new moon observing teams from across the country, the sum-up report of them is announced as follows, based on which Thursday Mordard 21st, is the 1st of Ramadhan ul-Mubark of the lunar year 1431.

It is worth mentioning that the above mentioned Moon observing teams publish the result of their observations at the end of each lunar month throughout the year.

A) The astronomical dimensions of the moon crescent on Tuesday night, Mordard (5th Iranian month) 19th, 1389 (Iranian solar calendar year), 29th of Sha’ban ul-Mo’azzam, (lunar calendar), 1431:

1. Time for alignment of the moon and the sun with the earth: 7:38 pm of Tuesday, Mordad 19th, 1389;
2. Sunset time: 20:00
3. Moonset time: 00:00
4. The moon’s height: - 0.649
5. The moon’s remaining time in the sky after the sunset: 00:00
6. The moon’s age: 12 hours and 22 minutes
7. The angular distance between the moon and the sun: 7.796
B) The predictions of different calendars:

The entire official calendars of the country, which are based on the calculations of the Country’s Calendar Calculation Center, affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of the University of Tehran, such as the astronomical calendar of Mr. Mesbah and Mr. Mesbahzdeh, and the astronomical calendar of Mansour Nojoumi have predicted that seeing the crescent of the new moon at sunset time of Tuesday Mordad 19th would be impossible, even with telescopes anywhere in Iran.

Therefore, the lunar month of Sha’ban would have 30 days and Thursday, August 12, 2010, Mordad 21st, 1389, would be the 1st of Ramadhan, 1431./end
