Medvedev to outline Dagestan`s socio-economic development

SOCHI, the Krasnodar territory, August 11 (Itar-Tass) - Russian
President Dmitry Medvedev will discuss the socio-economic development of
Dagestan, a republic in the North Caucasus, at a meeting in Sochi on
Wednesday.
The leaders of Dagestan, the presidential envoy in the North Caucasian
Federal District Alexander Khloponin and representatives of several
ministries and agencies will attend the meeting with Medvedev.
Forest fires, which have hit Dagestan as well, will also be a topic
for discussion. On August 6, President Medvedev talked to Dagestan's
President Magomed Salam Magomedov who reported to him on measures taken to
contain the blazes. The Russian president promised to order the government
to pay compensations to the fire victims.
Dagestan, like the entire North Caucasian Federal District, is under
special control of the Russian president.
"Our main task is to create normal living conditions in the
territories of our southern republics," Medvedev said many times. It means
socio-economic development, the creation of new jobs and the launch of new
productions and new investment projects.
Early in April, shortly after a major terrorist act in Kizlyar,
President Medvedev personally visited Dagestan on a five-hour visit. He
held a conference on anti-terror security and the region's economic
development. Medvedev called for tougher anti-terror measures. He also
said that people shouldn't be insulted because of their ethnic background.
At the meeting, Medvedev formulated five main tasks of fighting
terrorism in the Caucasus: first, the strengthening of Russia's law
enforcement agencies, the Interior Ministry, the Federal Security Service
and courts; second, the destruction of terrorists and their shelters;
third, to help those who decided to make a break with terrorists; fourth,
to develop economy, education and culture; fifth, to strengthen moral and
spiritual development.
