ASHGABAT, August 10 (Itar-Tass) - Turkmen President Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov has instructed the government to develop a project of
electric power exports to Pakistan through Afghanistan.
The construction of the 500 KV power transmission lines from the
republic's largest Mary electric power plant to the border with
Afghanistan will allow to launch the project.
The Cabinet meeting, where the president put forward his initiative,
also focused on the projects to boost electric power supplies to Iran. For
this purpose two 400KV power transmission lines will be built from the
Mary and Balkanabad electric power plants. The latter is located in
western Turkmenistan and will become a central point for the construction
of the new 500-KV power transmission line Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi.
Ministers also discussed the resumption of electric power exports to
Kazakhstan that were suspended in the middle of the 1990s.
At present, Turkmenistan exports electric power to Iran, Turkey,
Afghanistan and in autumn-winter - to Tajikistan.
The average annual electric power export does not exceed 3 billion
KW/h.
In compliance with Turkmenistan's economic development strategy until
2020 the country plans to produce up to 26.38 billion KW/h and to export
up to 6 billion KW/h a year.
