Iran, blessed with 17m dynamic young population : UNFPA

Tehran, Aug 11, IRNA - United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Iran Dr. Mehmet Hulki Uz said that the Islamic Republic is blessed with a demographic bonus of a dynamic young population of approximately 17 million today.

According to a press release issued by the UN Information Center (UNIC) here on Wednesday, Uz made the remarks in a message on the occasion of International Youth Day, August 12, 2010.

The full text of his message reads:

"On the occasion of the International Day of Youth, it is appropriate to note that many countries in the world, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, are experiencing or about to experience a demographic transition, with a significant youth bulge. The Islamic Republic of Iran is blessed with a demographic bonus of a dynamic young population of approximately 17 million today.

"Many of these countries are investing in their young people in order to achieve a healthy, socio-economically productive and poverty-free society. Investments in their well-being, learning and skills-building opportunities are also key to achieving the Millennium Development Goals on poverty, education, maternal and child health, the spread of HIV and AIDS, and sustainable development, as well as the goals set at the related international conferences, in particular, the ICPD and the Beijing commitments.

"As Ms. Thoraya A. Obaid, the Executive Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) notes in her message on this occasion: “Today and every day, young people are searching for opportunities to pursue and fulfill their dreams. … Today, as we launch the International Year of Youth, on the eve of the World Youth Conference in Mexico, I am calling on decision makers to listen to the needs of young people and respond to them. I call on governments to enter meaningful dialogue with young people to develop a mutual understanding on how to jointly address the development challenges facing us. Let us enter a partnership across generations to fulfill the promise of the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals to create a more peaceful and just world. ”

UNFPA is committed to working with all its partners to create an environment that nurtures and supports this powerful force for social and economic development./end
