PROPAGATION MUST BE USED AS MEANS OF IMPROVING MORALS: PRESIDENT

Jakarta, July 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that Islamic propagation must be used as a means of improving morals.

"Propagation can develop a positive, optimistic and clean soul in the face of challenges. In this way, we can improve our fate and condition," the president said when he received participants of ASEAN's Quran and Hadits Reading contest at the State Palace here on Wednesday.

The president also hoped that the contest which was attended by representatives from the 10 ASEAN member countries would serve as a unifying means for the Muslim community and as a reminder that the Quran was an important guidance for people in the present and after life.

"The holy book is a source of inspirations which will never run dry and will convince people of the truth of God's words," he said.

The Quran and Hadist (prophet's sayings) reading contest took place on July 22-23, 2008 and attended by 75 contestants, namely 12 from Malaysia, two from Singapore, 18 from Thailand, 8 from the Philippines, five from Cambodia, five from Myanmar, Timor Leste, four from Brunei Darussalam, two from Vietnam and 18 from Indonesia.
