KPK ASKED TO ASSIST VIETNAM'S ANTI-CORRUPTION DRIVE
Tokyo, July 24 (ANTARA) - The Vietnamese government has asked Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to help it in its effort to intensify its war on corruption in support of the country's economic growth, according to an Indonesian official in Hanoi.
The request was made to KPK Chairman Antasari Azhar at meetings with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong and the chief of the Vietnamese government's GI Inspectorate (the equivalent of KPK), Tran Van Truyen, in Hanoi on Wednesday, Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Pitono Purnomo told Antara by phone.
At the meetings with the Vietnamese officials, Azhar was accompanied by Purnomo.
He arrived in Vietnam on Tuesday (July 22) for a 3-day visit at the invitation of Vietnam's anti-gaft body under a provision of a mutual legal assistance agreement the two governments had signed in August 2007.
Tran said at the meeting fighting corruption was important as an effort to help create a conducive investment climate which would eventually have a positive impact on Vietnam's economic development.
He also hoped the KPK and GI could exchange expertise and information relevant to their missions to stamp out corruption in their respective countries.
After the meeting with Tran, Ashar paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Truong. On the occasion, Truong said fighting corruption was a difficult task but very important because it helped the state's economic growth.
The anti-corruption drive in Vietnam was being done gradually starting with preventive measures , followed by crackdowns on corruption, said Truong who is also vice chairman of the steering committee of Vietnam's campaign against corruption.
